The 2007-2008 Chess Year ended up with Brant Township Central School in Walkerton, hosting the First-Annual Brant Central Invitational Chess Tournament on Friday, May 9.
Twelve schools, with a total of 84 players, responded by bringing their Chess Clubs for a day of fun and friendly competition.
Before the tournament got started, two players were presented with their names on a plaque signifying their achievement of raising their Chess n' Math rating to over 1,000 points. These players were A.J. Kool from Meaford and Alexander Romanowich from Port Elgin.
The Junior Division was made up from schools having less than four players. The top scoring player from each school received a medallion.
First place went to Immaculate Conception School in Formosa with the top player being Mackenzie McGlynn and the other team member, his sister Veronica. Second place was a tie between Hanover Heights in Hanover with Emily Cormack and Meaford Community School in Meaford with A.J. Kool. Third place was awarded to Grey Highlands Secondary School in Flesherton being represented by Thomas Reburn.
The Intermediate Division was made up from schools having between four and 10 players. The top two scoring players from each school received medallions. First place went to Keppel Sarawak School in Owen Sound.
The top two players were Thomas Van Alphen and Scott Long. The other team members were Matt Clendenning and Austin Davenport. Second place was awarded to Beaver Valley Community School in Thornbury. The top two players were Michael Osborne and Eric Maitland.
Other team members were Patrick Kehoe, Karen Kehoe and Max Wilding-Davies.
