On May 30th, six bands from all over Ontario are coming to showcase their music, their style and their ambition. This will be a youth event that will not be forgotten.
Organizing the event is a foursome band called BlueGreenYellow. They are: Brandon Anderson, Wade Shaw, Blue Maloney, and Michael Gerrie. I had the pleasure of sitting down with them for tea at McGuinty's to chat about music, who they are and who is playing at the upcoming event.
BlueGreenYellow has been together for approximately eight months. They met at various events but their common ground is their school, GBSS. When asked about their musical style, Blue was quick to respond, "We take good flavours from all kinds of music and put them together."
He added that where they are musically allows them to be very versatile. Michael agreed but added that they definitely had a heavy rock vibe going on as well.
I was intrigued by how unique and interesting each of these lads were and wondered if they ever butt heads during their creative process. Almost in unison they stated that it's an open process. First, somebody starts jamming out a riff and then when another band member feels inspired, they add a layer, etc.
Their inspiration primarily comes from personal life experience. Brandon believes that your subconscious thoughts manifest themselves into music. Blue believes that you turn your music into your mirror. He spontaneously adds, "It's like IKEA".
Without skipping a beat, Wade pipes in, "without a manual". They all nod their heads in agreement and I seem to be the only one lost to the metaphor. But they patiently explain. You order the product from IKEA and it comes in a box with many parts i.e. musical notes, rhythms, styles, but it's up to the owner to put it together, i.e. it's up to the composer to arrange it. For an IKEA consumer, a manual is necessary. For a musician, a manual is redundant. A meaningful composition can only come from the heart and soul.
I am very much looking forward to seeing BlueGreenYellow perform, as well as other talented bands such as, The Last True Gentlemen, Ossified, Prophecy of Plagues, One Strong and McCarthy at the Meaford Hall on Friday, May 30th starting at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 at the door. Intermission is at 7 p.m. and we will be serving pizza. Sponsoring this youth event is The Rotary of Meaford and The Community for Youth Coalition (C4YC).
