Deer continue to be the leading cause of motor vehicle collisions in Grey County according statistics released by the OPP this week.
In May, 66 per cent of all collisions reported involved deer or other animals. In June that percentage dropped to 41per cent, but the overall number of collisions increased. Over the two month period there were 77 motor vehicle-animal collisions.
"It is evident that a collision with an animal is one of the biggest risks that a driver in Grey County faces," says Senior Constable Steven Starr, Grey County OPP Media Relations Officer.
"While most are with deer, there are also other collisions involving animals such as stray livestock. Collisions with large animals, or crashes caused while attempting to avoid animals can be very dangerous."
Starr offered the following tips to avoid deer collisions:
• Use high beams whenever possible
• Watch for the glowing eyes of animals
• Scan beyond the roadway, watch ditches, fence lines and bush lots
• Slow down and be extra vigilante in areas where deer are know to frequent
Starr says that when you see a deer or other animal on the road, take the following actions: Brake firmly but don't lock up your wheels - this will enable you to steer. Steer in control only- never swerve to avoid hitting an animal. Stop safely and look around because other animals may follow.
