County wants better weekend traffic flow in Rockford

Grey County officials are going to investigate ways to improve traffic flow at the intersection in Rockford.

The intersection at County Road 18 and Highway 6/10 experiences some of the heaviest traffic in all of Grey County - particularly during weekends and more so on long weekends.

A visitor coming north can proceed straight through the lights into Owen Sound, turn left to proceed to Sauble Beach or turn right towards Meaford. This past long weekend traffic lineups at the intersection to turn left were backed up for miles.

Chatsworth Deputy Mayor Bob Pringle brought the issue to the county council table at last Tuesday morning's regular meeting. Pringle observed a long line of traffic turning left at the lights in Rockford on the civic holiday weekend. The huge back log of cars slowed traffic at the intersection.

Pringle suggested county officials speak to the Ministry of Transportation provincial officials about changing the length of time the left turn green light signal is activated for north bound traffic.

"It certainly was a long line of traffic (on Monday, August 4). They cars just couldn't get through, it must have been backed up two miles," said Pringle.

Grey County Director of Transportation Gary Shaw said he would take the issue to his provincial counterparts. Transportation and Public Safety committee Chair Howard Greig said county officials would speak to provincial representatives at the upcoming Association of Municipalities conference about making improvements to the timing of the traffic lights at that intersection.

"We do need to bring this to their attention, it might be situation they aren't even aware of," said Greig.

In an interview after the meeting Pringle said it was important to keep traffic flowing considering the number of visitors that come to the area on weekends.

"Maybe all it will take to fix it is a special sensor. It was really bad on the (long) weekend," he said of the situation. "The local people living here know the other routes around the situation, but most visitors follow the main road or their GPS system and they don't know there are other ways to go," said Pringle.
