Grey Highlands Mayor Brian Mullin will be seeking a third term as Mayor in this October's municipal election.
At the Grey Highlands committee of the whole meeting held on January 18, Mullin confirmed for reporters covering the meeting that he has registered as a candidate for Mayor in this year's election.
"I've been asked on a number of occasions what my plans are. With my wife, I made the decision - unless something happens - that I would be running for Mayor this year," Mullin explained.
The Mayor said he is proud of his record the past two terms as Mayor (he has served three terms on council - two as Mayor and one as a councillor). Mullin said he believes work remains to be done.
"We still have some unfinished business. I think the municipality has moved forward considerably during this term. Our financial position is strong - despite the challenges this year due to lost provincial funding," he said. "We have some tough decisions to make this year and I'd like to see them through," he noted.
Mullin was asked about his priorities if he is re-elected and he quickly pointed out a couple major issues: a strategic plan for the municipality and policing.
"We have to continue to look ahead strategically. We should have a (Strategic) Plan by now, but there is only so much time and resources," he said.
Policing is also a major issue in Grey Highlands. In 2010, the OPP has told Grey Highlands council that police contract costs will rise in excess of $330,000. Mullin said OPP costs for all Grey County municipalities are on the rise and local councils need to consider their options on the matter.
"Policing is a concern. I like to take the next step and formally look at what the options are," said Mullin.
The Mayor also said finances for municipal governments will become tighter and tighter due to provincial cutbacks and municipal leaders will be forced to examine cost and service reductions going forward.
"Obviously there is a lot to do," he said.
