A fire starting on a stove top in a Meaford home business consumed a whole kitchen, but didn't spread to the rest of the house thanks to the efforts of the Meaford Fire Department.
"Those fires can get out of hand quickly," said Fire Prevention Officer Mike Molloy. "This one was extinguished quickly thanks to the quick action of our guys."
The fire department was called out at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, January 21. The initial truck on scene carried two fire fighters and more arrived after. There were two teams of two fighting the fire inside the home, which was contained to the kitchen.
Molloy said the fire started on the stovetop when heated wax ignited.
The home on Sykes St. is owned Dr. Irene Cop who also operates Shoreline Wellness Solutions out of the residence. She said she was in the building at the time, but was able to get out quickly when she noticed the fire.
Molloy said there was extensive damage to the kitchen; he estimates a dollar value of $40,000.
The fire crews were back at the station and had the trucks refilled and clean by 5:45.
This was the first fire that the Meaford Fire Department has responded to since the fire at Reed's Restaurant in September 2009.
