Meaford Rotary Club member Rick Galbraith and Thornbury-Clarksburg Rotary Club member Rick Offord were at MCS on Friday morning to show off the contents of the ShelterBox the students raised enough money to purchase.
The boxes include a ten-person tunnel tent, 10 sleeping bags, lights, heat, a stove, some pots and pans, dishes, tools, a water purifier and other supplies. Volunteers in England are currently working 24 hours per day to pack the boxes in order to keep up with demand.
"The students raised $1,000. That's enough to buy one ShelterBox. The Rotary Club will buy one to match that and the federal government will buy two," explained Galbraith.
MCS held a special assembly for the Rotarians to talk to them about the ShelterBoxes and the earthquake relief efforts going on in Haiti. One of the tents was set up in the school's foyer giving students an opportunity to look over the tent and all the supplies that come with it that will soon be sent to help a family in Haiti.
Offord told The Express that since the ShelterBox efforts began $52,000 has been raised by local Rotary Clubs from Penetanguishene across to Lion's Head.
Galbraith said local Rotary Clubs are continuing to collect money for the ShelterBox program. Anybody interested in donated to the cause can drop off money at the Meaford Chamber of Commerce office. He said donations made by February 12 will be donated to efforts in Haiti.
