Saturday night turned out to be a real barn-burner for the Meaford Midgets.
The game started with a flurry of checking and passing by both teams, and great saves at both ends of the ice. Meaford opened the scoring, with a cannonading shot from the point by Ben Miller being deftly deflected by Jeff Carefoot into the net. Oro kept coming and tied the game at 1-1.
Meaford kept the pressure up with aggressive forechecking by Evan Gilroy, Brad Hill and Sheldon Butler, before Scott Burgess potted another goal for a 2-1 lead. Nathan Fitzgerald immediately after stopped a breakaway by Oro and Meaford looked to take a 3-1 lead but was denied, after what looked like a sure-goal was called back for reasons unknown.
Oro took advantage of this and tied the game 2-2 before the end of the second period. The Mustangs came out re-charged, and kept a steady forecheck by Jeremy Davison and Evan Gilroy producing numerous scoring chances. The defense held strong, with timely hitting by Chris Mahy, Chris Moore and Alex Dennison rocking the Oro players time and again.
Great passing by Justin Eagles, Jonathan Craig and Ben Miller kept the forwards moving, and it finally paid off when Calvin Roach controlled the puck behind the Oro net, be-dazzled their defense and passed across to a strong-footed Carson Laporte, who banged it home. Meaford was again ahead, 3-2. Oro kept forcing the net, but Fitzy again and again flashed a quick glove or steady kick-save.
With a sixth attacker, Oro left the net empty and forced Meaford into their end, before a blocked shot and a burst of road runner-like speed by James Batty allowed him to score the insurance goal for a 4-2 lead.
A well-played game by the entire team earned their first victory of the season, and it looks like they are on their way to fame and glory. Congratulations to coaching staff Don Fitzgerald, Paul Eagles and Brian Laporte for an exceptional game plan.
