Simcoe-Grey MP Helena Guergis has been named one of the 20 most influential women in sport and physical activity in Canada, according to the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS).
"I am honoured to be on a list of so many dynamic and impressive women," Guergis said. "I wish to thank all those who proposed and selected my name to be added to such an amazing list."
Guergis is the secretary of state for sport and a self-billed vocal and ardent supporter of Canadian athletes.
"I will not only continue to advance all amateur sports in Canada, but to update and revise Sport Canada's Women in Sport Policy to help even more women compete in more sports on a national and international level."
The CAAWS 2007 list of most influential women in sport and physical activity represents a cross-section of women from across the country.
Others to make the 2007 list include water ski coach Pat Messner and ParticipACTION's president and CEO Kelly Murumets.
This is the sixth time the CAAWS has announced the list.
Several current and recently retired athletes are on the list, including hockey
player-turned-commentator Cassie Campbell and climate change advocate and cross-country skier Sara Renner.
