Trauma victims will feel the warm embrace of a cozy handmade blanket thanks to the the Georgian Quilters Club.

At their monthly meeting at Meaford Hall Thursday, the group donated 12 handmade quilts to the Meaford OPP detachment.

Community Quilts project organizer Beate Kingsley presented  six large and six small quilts to OPP Sgt. Tom Kennedy and OPP Community Liaison Officer Bob Sewell.

Kingsley said the Community Quilts annual project provides an opportunity for the Georgian Quilters to donate their time and effort to producing quilts for a deserving charity or organization in the community. Past efforts included donating to The Quilt, an organization dedicated to providing quilts for patients suffering from breast cancer.

This year, the Quilters decided to donate directly to a local cause and after discussing ideas with clubs in other areas and researching possible recipients, Kingsley decided on the OPP. The quilts will be vacuum sealed in plastic, carried in local cruisers and will given to victims of trauma.

"A lot of hard work, time and effort has been put into these quilts," said Sgt. Kennedy, accepting the donation.  "Quilts give victims comfort and something to hang onto which makes our job easier. I commend you for your efforts."

"With weather like we've been having, especially on a night call, these quilts would be greatly appreciated," added Sewell.

Material for the quilts was donated to the group by the husband of one of the club's late members, Carole Martin.
