Grey County OPP are asking drivers to use more caution when driving during snow storms after two accidents involving snow plows.

In both cases, the snowplows were rear-ended when visibility was poor.

On February 19, a Markdale man was seriously injured when he drove his sport utility vehicle into the back of a Grey County Snowplow.

The collision occurred northeast of Markdale in Grey Highlands on Grey Road 12 just south of Side Road 13A. The  southbound 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee struck the rear of a southbound snowplow that was pushing back snow banks in the southbound lane.

The Grand Cherokee was demolished and the driver, a 63-year-old Markdale man,  was taken to Grey Bruce Health Services-Markdale with serious injuries. His wife, a passenger in the vehicle, was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Damage to the plow, a tandem Volvo truck, was minimal and the driver was not injured.

Grey Road 12 was closed for several hours while an OPP Technical Traffic Investigator investigated the scene.

On the January 21,  a pickup truck was demolished when the driver drove into the rear of a Grey County Snowplow on Grey Rd 16 in Georgian Bluffs.

"These two incidents illustrate the importance of slowing (down) when entering whiteout conditions," said Media Relations Officer Steve Starr.

"The snow kicked up by a plow, especially when the banks are powder snow, can greatly reduce visibility and mimic a wind-generated whiteout."
