Fell off the mark on Earth Hour

I feel I must comment on Chris Fell's editorial of last week.

Rarely have I seen a commentary that so completely misses the mark on the issues at hand.  He uses the excuse of paying for his energy as a justifiable reason to not only ignore the point of turning off your power on March 29th for one hour at  8 p.m., but to flaunt his supposed right to the energy he uses because of this payment.

The point of this exercise is to recognize that we DON'T pay the true cost of the resources we in Canada waste at an alarming rate. We pay electricity at well below market rates because our energy is subsidized.

We do not pay for the irreversible environmental cost of mountains in Virginia being leveled for the coal we use in Ontario to create electricity. We do not pay the cost of subsistence farmers being pushed off their lands in South America in order to grow eucalyptus trees so that we can have toilet paper to flush.

We do not pay the price of living in overcrowded tenements on low wages to make the bits of junk we can buy for a dollar. We are not paying the cost of the oil sands project as the environmental catastrophe that it represents will be borne not by us but by our children.

For almost everything we consume, there is someone else who pays a truer cost through poor living conditions, poor health, lack of access to clean water and lack of access to basic human rights.

The whole globe will be paying the costs of the last century of our lifestyle through global warming whether they had a part in creating it or not, with the largest brunt expected to be borne by those who have the least resources to deal with it.

When parts of the globe turn dark this Saturday it will send a message that we understand these costs, that the costs of our energy and consumer waste is borne by others across the entire planet, that we recognize that this attitude cannot be sustained, that we are a global community and want change to happen.

For being an avowed Star Wars geek, Chris Fell should at least appreciate what the pictures from space of our planet will look like on Saturday night.
