A pair of local men were recognized by the Governor General on Wednesday.
Commanding Officer Steven Bell of Collingwood and Chief Warrant Officer Wayne Bartlett of Meaford were given Meritorious Service Cross (military division) medals at Rideau Hall.
Bell received the award for his service in a variety of military groups and task forces
As co-chair of the standing contingency task force working group, a group that did research on present and future military operations, Bell was also the first officer-in-charge of the Maritime Amphibious Unit from June 2006 to April 2007.
"Commander Bell consistently displayed the highest standards of professionalism and innovative leadership. He is credited for writing the standing contingency force concept of operations, and for providing critical guidance with the planning of the first integrated tactical effects experiment," said a press release from the Governor General's office.
Bartlett was recognized for his military service.
"Chief Warrant Officer Bartlett is being recognized for his outstanding military expertise while deployed as the regimental sergeant major of the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team in Afghanistan, from February to August 2007. His integrity and profound regard for cultural differences greatly contributed to improving the confidence of the Afghan National Army and its operational effectiveness."
