Chris looks back at Earth Hour (yawn!) and other subjects

I woke up Sunday morning and had a good yawn.

I also realized the Earth was colder, the polar bears weren't sick anymore and that the ice shelf in Antarctica had re-attached itself.

Well, maybe not. Oh well. As long as everybody enjoyed the Nelly Furtado concert, then the event was a success.

I just love tax-and-spend left-wingers. Their latest "save the world" initiative is something called a carbon tax. Get used to that term, folks - you're going to be hearing a lot about carbon taxes in the near future. A carbon is an extra levy on the price of gasoline. As if we need the price of gasoline to rise even more.

According to the carbon tax lovers if the government increases the price of gasoline it will force all of us evil people that own automobiles to change our behaviour and get our "carbon spewing" vehicles off the road.

The logic of that whole argument borders on the ludicrous. What has the price of gasoline been doing steadily for the past decade? It has been rising. Has anybody changed their behaviour? Easy question to answer: no, in fact, quite the opposite. Consumers have steadily been moving away from compact, fuel-efficient vehicles in favour of large sized SUV type gas-guzzlers.

I would suggest that consumers are so numb to gasoline price spikes that the introduction of a carbon tax won't even put a dent in their thinking. Most of us will do what we've done for years: shrug and go fill up our car when the needle is on "E."

You really have to admire the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Only a perpetually doomed franchise like Toronto could mess up losing.

Yes, you read that right. The Leafs even lose wrong. Anybody with a brain could see several months ago that this team was not going to make the playoffs. It's goal way back then should have been to finish as poorly as possible to secure a high draft position to take a stab at getting future superstar Steve Stamkos.

What did the Leafs do? They went on a winning streak! Their remarkable streak of good hockey lifted them all the way from 13th place to 12th place. In the process, the team ruined its draft position and now will likely draft outside the top ten this summer.

Baseball season is upon us. This time of year is always exciting for me. I'm a baseball junkie. I love the game. I think about the game every single day of the year. I wish I could say this is the year the Blue Jays will overcome either Boston or New York. However, I'm not sure that's possible.

I certainly think the Jays can pitch with both those teams. Front to back, I think I prefer the pitching staff of the Jays, but it's at the plate where the boys from Toronto will suffer. I just don't see how Toronto's hitting can keep pace with the ramped-up bats of New York and Boston. Only time will tell and I hope I'm wrong.
