Competitors delivered knockout performances to a capacity audience in the second round of Rockstar: Georgian Bay last Friday in the Georgian Bay Secondary School Cafeteria.

The evening's entertainment began with a guest performance by the Teacher Band who played the BTO classic, Takin' Care of Business. The band gave a solid performance carried by Glenn Gibson's spot on vocals and guitar playing as well as drummer Barrie Baynham's stage costume, which was very reminiscent of the New York Dolls circa 1972.

"There are like 6,000 people here...well, no, but there are several hundred," commented audience member Andy McCausland looking at the crowd, which had already reached Fire Code capacity before the first competitors, the Fletch Dawgs, had even performed.

GBSS Music Teacher Patrick Delaney also revealed the official Rockstar: Georgian Bay trophy at the beginning of the evening. Music Council Co-President Rachelle Gingras created it with the help of shop teacher Drew Ferris and it is so ugly that competitors can't help but want it.

Just as in Round 1, the evening's performances offered a huge variety with contestants covering hits by Jack Johnson, Phil Collins, Velvet Revolver, Van Morrison and Evanescence, just to name a few. The concert also featured the first performance of an original song in the competition.

Unlike Round 1, however, it was impossible to pick the best performance' all were exceptional. A few that stood out were French Teacher Phillip Morin's acoustic version of Matchbox 20's Back to Good, which featured guest trumpeter Steven Osborne, as well as Anytime Craze's rendition of Wine Red by Hush Sound.

Another highlight of the night was the audience Guitar Hero competition in which Sean Postma faced off against his archrival, math teacher Tim Johns. Despite some last minute trickery from Johns, Postma proved victorious.

At the end of the evening, audience members flooded to the exit and back of the cafeteria to vote for their favourite acts of the night. It's unfortunate to think that three fewer participants will be playing next month, but such is the nature of this competition.

"People have really stepped up and put on their A-game," said audience member Alex Cummings after the show. That comment only adds to the excitement to the prospect of what these dynamic young musicians will have to offer in Round 3 on April 28.
