Meaford Community School student A.J. Kool won Gold at the 2008 Grey Bruce Regional Chess Challenge held on Saturday, April 5 at The Knights of Columbus Hall in Owen Sound.

Kool was one of 43 competitors representing 22 schools in the tournament in which players compete by grade and the winner from each grade qualifies to represent the Grey Bruce Region at the Provincial Chess Challenge in Toronto on April 13. The event is sponsored by the Chess n' Math Association of Canada.  

The Chess n' Math Association allows prequalifiers to attend the Provincial Chess Challenge. They invite the top 10 rated players (as of Jan 1) for each grade in Ontario to attend.

The Grey Bruce area had four of these players this year: Alexander Romanowich from St. Dominique Savio in Owen Sound for Grade 3, Victor Romanowich from St. Joseph's in Port Elgin for Grade 8, Michael Osborne from Beaver Valley Community in Thornbury, also for Grade 8 and John Drimmie, Owen Sound for Grade 12.

Other local winners at the regional tournament included,  Grade 8-Gold-Patrick Kehoe, Beaver Valley Community, Thornbury; Grade 9-Gold- Brendon Osmann-Deyman, Georgian Bay S.S., Meaford.
